News and moss-in-snow

First things first: the Rocky Mountain News, one of Denver's two daily newspapers, recently did a nice article on 'The Jade Room' in the business section. You can view it by searching 'Rocky Mountain News' and 'The Jade Room' on Google.

When a white piece of jade has strong spots of green, this is called 'moss-in-snow' jade. (Think of spots of green ink on white paper.) It is said that such jade is 'young', and that the spots are seeds that will mature in time and even fill the piece with green color. It considered a virtue of the wearer that they have the 'ability' to turn jade greener. Not only that, but it is also a tribute to the wearer's psychological and physiological state that they do this. The belief is that all stones have 'qi', or 'life force', and jade has the highest 'qi' of all. To be able to add to jade's qi is therefore quite a feat, because it is usually thought that jade imparts qi to the wearer, not vice versa.

In some villages there were special people who had the ability to turn jade green, and they were often given pieces to wear and sleep with at night in the hope that the stone would be enhanced by this contact.

Will this happen? Can jade turn greener and are there those who have this ability more than others? I hope so.
